New Orleans:
There's a Crime Going On!

Click Here Saint Bernard Parish, to the west of New Orleans, was a racially mixed neighborhood. The median income was about $36,000, with a 4% unemployment rate. Almost 80% of the homes were owner-occupied. This is Saint Bernard Parish after Katrina. 100% of the houses were declared uninhabitable.

The St. Bernard Project uses volunteer labor to help rebuild, house by house. This is a small organization, created and staffed by some real American heroes. I urge you to support them.

These pictures are mostly from the Lower Ninth ward, and were taken in March of 2007 -- more than 1 1/2 years after Katrina. Almost nothing has happened, and virtually all of the reconstruction has been done by homeowners or volunteers.

In March of 2007 we went with a group of volunteers to work on some houses. We were there for a week of hard work. It was both rewarding and frustrating.
